Backyard Birding
Last year Crosby and I started bird-watching from our school room window. She would help me keep the feeders filled and together we could spend hours pouring over our bird books trying to identify anything that we could spot. On a trip to Florida we spent a couple of days with cousins, Bob and Betty, and they took us to the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. That was the first time we saw a green heron and wood ducks and we were excited to add them to our life list! Bob and Betty gifted us with a great pair of binoculars and, armed with the Merlin Bird ID app developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, our interest began to grow.
Bob and I also share an interest in photography; he is always sending me great articles about new technology and links to some amazing photos. I also especially enjoy his photos of hummingbirds and butterflies (and people, too!). So this year I decided to try my hand at bird and wildlife photography. It’s been such a challenge, but has become so enjoyable and added an extra special element to our bird watching. Perhaps I’ll do a monthly photo “journal” of different species we’ve observed throughout the year. I hope you enjoy seeing these as much as I’ve enjoyed taking them!
